Executive Director Tom Lamar Receives Prestigious United Vision for Idaho Award
The Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute (PCEI) is honored to announce the prestigious award received by Tom Lamar, PCEI's Executive Director. The Award of "Idaho's Environmental Leader of the Year" was given to Lamar at the United Vision for Idaho's 11th Annual Progressive Celebration & Awards Dinner on January 9, 2009 at the DoubleTree Riverside, in Boise.

Thomas C. Lamar has been PCEI's Executive Director since 1990. His twenty-eight years of experience in the public interest sector has helped PCEI increase citizen involvement in environmental issues. Tom has also taught Conservation Leadership in the University of Idaho, Conservation Social Sciences Department for the past five years. In 2007 he was elected to the Moscow City Council. In that role, he serves on numerous committees and commissions including the Moscow Urban Renewal Agency.

As the Executive Director for PCEI, Tom has helped to develop other community organizations including the Western Sustainable Agriculture Working Group, Palouse Land Trust, Rural Roots, Idaho Smart Growth, Village Bicycle Project, and Backyard Harvest. Tom serves on the steering committee of the Idaho Environmental Summit, and on the board of the Latah Trail Foundation.

Tom holds an MS degree in Environmental Science from Washington State University (1985). He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Anthropology at the University of Delaware in 1982. Tom studied the medicinal use of Plants by the Shipibo Indians of the Peruvian rainforest during his time at both WSU and University of Delaware. Tom's work background includes Central American peace organizing in the 1980's. He also worked with the Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides for two years as an advocate for pesticide exposure victims. Tom enjoys swimming, running, bicycling, triathlons, and gardening.

The keynote speaker at the 11th Annual Progressive Celebration & Awards Dinner was Jim Hansen, a leader of the progressive movement in Idaho since his days in the legislature. He guided United Vision for Idaho and United Action for Idaho from their beginnings to the organizations they are today.
