Introduction Who can participate in "Monitoring Amphibians on the Palouse"
(MAP)?
Anyone with access to a pond or wetlands in the study area is invited
to participate – teachers, students, concerned citizens, bird watchers,
frog lovers – all are welcome. Families with young children may find it
especially rewarding to adopt a site and record its changes over time.
Since the seven amphibian species present on the Palouse are easy to
identify, MAP is a great way for beginning naturalists to become
involved in a meaningful conservation project. ANY information you can
provide on the species present at your site is valuable. As you become
more skilled, you may want to participate in other aspects of the
project, such as monitoring the physical pond parameters, collecting
weather data at your site, or tracking individual frogs or salamanders
over time.
How can I get involved?
There are two ways to get involved.
- You can adopt one of the existing ponds and agree to monitor it
annually, biennially, or every 5 years.
- If you own a pond or wetland area, or have access to a pond or
wetland by landowner permission, that area can be added to MAP, and you
can monitor it annually, biennially, or every 5 years. A MAP volunteer
can visit your site with you to collect the initial data.
Adding a site to the project
If you have a pond or a wetland to add to MAP, please send an e-mail to
Greg Fizzell. You will be assigned
a site number and a name, and a MAP volunteer will assist you in
submitting your initial site description, per the Site Registration
Form.
