Workshop Purpose
Our purpose was to conduct an alternative energy planning workshop for Palouse-area residents. The workshop focused on procedures for utilizing renewable energy sources in a typical home.
Check out PCEI's new Energy Audit Project, designed to help local homeowners learn how they can save energy and money!

Workshop Objectives
  • To provide students with a practical application for theories learned in the classroom.
  • Allow students to organize and conduct a community service.
  • Encourage information sharing among students and community members.
  • Help build a showcase for future home energy tours.
  • Facilitate the transition from non-renewable energy sources.
The first step in conducting the workshops was to take the participants on a guided tour of the case study residence, pictured here. This home was to be used as an example of a residence with potential for alternative energy usage. The team members were responsible for analyzing this potential and then teaching their findings to the participants during the subsequent workshops.
Workshop Schedule
  • Workshop tour of home: Saturday, February 23, 2002: 9am-noon
  • Workshop class session #1: Wednesday, February 27, 2002: 7-9pm
  • Workshop class session #2: Wednesday, March 6, 2002: 7-9pm
  • Workshop class session #3: Wednesday, March 13, 2002: 7-9pm

Many issues discussed
Despite the cold weather and fierce winds, the tour was a success. Questions were answered and a significant amount of information sharing took place. Points made during the tour will be elaborated upon during the subsequent workshops over the next few weeks.

Throughout the series of workshops, alternative energy aspects such as windmill energy, photovoltaic systems, flat plate collectors, and passive solar energy were discussed.

UI Solar Team members as pictured from left to right:
  • Andrew DuBuisson - Passive Solar Analysis/ Wind Measurements
  • Chris Fischer - Active Solar- collector and storage sizing/ Water Pumping- PV or windmill
  • Dee J. Rammell - Mechanical Design/ Economic Analysis
  • Patrick O'Dell - Web page/ Documentation/ Pictures
  • Frank Albrecht - Communications with PCEI and Homeowners/ Team Leader
Andrew and Chris test the computer system in the classroom. Chris explained active solar collection and water pumping potential in the case study residence. Andrew discussed Passive solar energy and wind measurements in the second workshop.

Dee J. explains the economics involved with the system as well as the mechanical design for a windmill system.
Patrick conducts a survey to gain feedback on the team's success during the final workshop.

Workshop's participants listening in. The workshops also catered to an open forum discussion, which led to some valuable input from the attendees.
Workshop Results
According to the survey, which was taken during the final workshop, 100% of the workshop's attendees felt that the workshops were worth their time. All the participants felt that the workshops should be maintained as an annual event, and all the attendees planned on making some alternative energy changes to their own homes.

Please stay informed with the PCEI newsletter and website so you can take part in future tours and workshops.
