Think of it as the ultimate field trip! Classes are conducted in a
coniferous forest, at the edge of a mountain stream, on the shore of a
lake, and in a meadow. The most useful tools for learning are readily
available; the students' five senses. The subject of ecosystem science
serves as the context for standards-based study of science, technology,
mathematics, and language arts.
Operating in the fall, winter, and spring these 3-5 day programs
provide an unforgettable learning experience for 5th and 6th grade
public, private, charter and homeschool students.
“We value the MOSS program as an integral part of our
curriculum.”
-Superintendent, Moscow Public Schools |
Students learn in small teams and are taught by University of
Idaho graduate students, faculty, and staff. Each day, teams of 5-8
students accompany their instructors to field sites to scientifically
characterize local ecosystems. They collect data on local atmospheric
conditions, vegetative cover, soil characteristics, and aquatic
ecosystems' physical, chemical, and biological conditions.
"I wish the school I go to everyday was like this
one."
-Kamiah 5th grade student
Finally, students work with fellow teammates and instructors to
synthesize and analyze the data they've collected, compare it to data
collected elsewhere, and make inferences based on their findings.

Team-building and mutual respect are important components of
our field programs. New life skills in communication and group
decision-making are the result when students participate in a series of
low-ropes elements. Clear communication, respect (for ourselves and
others), and teamwork are stressed through active metaphor.
"The teambuilding exercises were fun and require students to
develop critical life skills."
-5-6th grade teacher, Moscow Charter School
|
The 5 "Cs" - communication, collaboration, caring, connection, and
cooperation - are reinforced during the entire week, in the field,
while sharing chores, and in small group living. Low instructor-student
ratios allow us to give abundant individualized attention.
"Our school will definitely be attending again. The school board
and parents were so impressed with the outcome that our administration
will be helping with the financing next year."
-5th grade teacher, Kamiah Elementary

The package fee for students and adults provides lodging,
food, equipment and instruction.
Each student who attends MOSS, and is qualified to receive either free
or reduced meals at school, will be charged a reduced program fee.
Five Day Program
Regular Rate: $132/student
Reduced Lunch Rate: $116/student
Free Lunch Rate: $105/student
Four Day Program
Regular Rate: $122/student
Reduced Lunch Rate: $106/student
Free Lunch Rate: $95/student
Three Day Program
Regular Rate: $112/student
Reduced Lunch Rate: $96/student
Free Lunch Rate: $85/student
This requires that attending schools provide a list of the number of
students that qualify for the federal free or reduced meal program two
weeks prior to program arrival. Teachers and chaperones are charged
the Regular Rate. A nonrefundable $200 deposit is required to hold
your class reservation. The deposit is applied to the total program
fee. You will be billed for the balance once the program is
complete.

Transportation to and from the
University
of Idaho McCall Field Campus is the responsibility of each school.
We have seen it done three ways:
- The school sends a bus and leaves it there for the week with
the driver (the driver then participates as an adult chaperone in the
program).
- The school sends a bus, it returns to the school district for the
week, and then sends it back at the end of the program to pick the
group up.
- The school/teacher coordinates a carpool with parents/chaperones
driving students in personal minivans etc.
|
It is also the responsibility of each school to recruit and bring an
appropriate number of adult chaperones. The number of chaperones
you need to bring depends on the number of students attending the
program. Generally, schools should count on bringing one adult per
seven students. This amount might increase or decrease depending on
individual circumstances. High School students are not an
acceptable substitute for adult chaperones. McCall Outdoor Science
School staff cannot serve as extra chaperones for your group.
