    Meet the Class of 2007!

    Program Description
Imagine an office that consists of the rivers, mountains, and lakes of the central Idaho Rockies. The Environmental Education and Interpretation Specialist will provide high quality, field-based environmental education and interpretation programs to the youth and citizens of Idaho. One-third of the work will take place at Idaho’s only residential outdoor science school, one-third in various schools around the state, and one-third at public agencies and nonprofit organizations across Idaho.

Your 12 months of service with the Mobile Environmental Education Corps (MEEC) will consist of two distinct phases.

Phase 1: MOSS Residential and Outreach Program: (August 11 - May 30) The McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS) is a 3-5 day residential education program that hosts 5th - 6th grade students from across Idaho at the University of Idaho McCall Field Campus. Our mission at MOSS is to use the outdoors as an integrating context for learning about science, place, and community. As a field instructor at this program, you will lead teams of 6-10 students through the forests and along the streams of the Salmon River Mountains as they harness the power of science to unlock the mysteries of the world around us. You will also participate in graduate level training programs in community ecology, teaching methods, and outdoor leadership. Members will take these courses for undergraduate or graduate credit and earn a Professional Certificate in Environmental Education.

Your winter and spring will continue in McCall with both Winter Residential and Spring Outreach Programs. Outreach Programs take MOSS on the road by visiting schools across the state of Idaho. You will implement a catalog of environmental education programs both in classroom and field settings. Your training will continue with additional short courses, conferences, and workshops.

Phase 2: Summer Placement Program: (June 1 - August 31) Each AmeriCorps member will spend the summer at various placement sites including public natural resource agencies and non-profit organizations who are looking for skilled educators, interpreters, and natural resource technicians. During this segment, you will apply the skills and knowledge gained during the intense training and hands-on application of the prior segment to help environmental organizations statewide fullfill their missions.

    Program Benefits

The education award is taxed in the year that it is used.
  • Each participant will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the DeVlieg Foundation applied directly to their tuition bill.
  • Loan forbearance while in service (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable).

  • To Apply
Click here for a complete position description.

MOSS students have the choice of enrolling at the University of Idaho as either a "non-degree seeking" (NDS) student OR as a full-time, "degree seeking" (DS) graduate student.

NDS students are not required to apply to the UI College of Graduate Studies. NDS students simply apply to MOSS and AmeriCorps simultaneously and are admitted based on the merits of their application. NDS students are NOT eligible for Federal Financial Aid.

DS students must apply to MOSS/AmeriCorps and the University of Idaho Graduate Admissions simultaneously. DS students must be accepted both by MOSS and the UI College of Graduate Studies. Part of being accepted by the College of Graduate Studies is being accepted by a specific department and degree program at the UI. MOSS is an affiliate program of several Degree Options at the UI. Most of these degree options require the GRE. DS students ARE eligible for Federal Financial Aid.
