Community Ecology For Environmental Educators Instructor: Tom Giesen
More about Tom
Course Goals:
- To introduce field instructors to a basic understanding of
ecological system functions as a means of connecting the myriad
disciplines in ecology into a coherent whole.
- To encourage field instructors to identify and understand examples
of those ecological functions in nature, in the MOSS environment, to
link theory to field examples.
- To develop field instructor’s ability to verbalize their
understanding of ecological functions and use that understanding in
discussions of current ecological issues and crises.
- To develop the ability of field instructors to utilize ecological
functions as a measure of the probable sustainability of various
human-nature interactions.
Manner of Instruction:
MOSS field instructor ecological education is organized in block units.
There are two primary, intensive instructional periods for ecology. The
first is a week-long, all-day introduction to ecological functions in
terrestrial ecology with two periods of lecture and field work each
day. The second is a half-week session directed to 1) aquatic ecology
and 2) an integration of terrestrial and aquatic ecology focused on
experiences field instructors have encountered in their work with
students. In addition, there are 1) occasional ecology lectures and 2)
ongoing informal interaction with field instructors during their
program.
Evaluation:
Evaluation of field instructor performance in ecology is measured in a
variety of ways:
- performance in presentations,
- performance in class discussions,
- performance in fieldwork,
- development of a pertinent research question, and
- a final essay examination on all the materials of the course.
