The Mobile Environmental Education Corps is getting
things done for Idaho schools, local communities and our
environment!
Thanks to an AmeriCorps grant through Serve Idaho, the Governor’s
Commission on Service, we are able to enlist fifteen motivated
individuals in our Mobile Environmental Education Corps. The Mobile
Environmental Education Corps (MEEC) is team of fifteen environmental
educators that receive 9 months of training in teaching, ecology, and
leadership by presenting standards-based programming to Idaho schools
with the McCall Outdoor Science School. It is a challenging and
rewarding 9 months for MEEC members in terms of personal and
professional growth and the experience prepares them well for working
in the environmental education and conservation field. You can learn
more about the program our members are currently engaging students in
by visiting: .
During the summer months, these individuals take their skills on the
road and work on conservation and environmental education projects at
non-profit and government agencies throughout Idaho. In previous
summers, MEEC members have served with the Sawtooth National Recreation
Area, the National Park Service, Zoo Boise, and Idaho Fish and Game just
to name a few.

Host an AmeriCorps member this summer
MEEC summer sponsoring organizations are provided with a well trained
individual capable of initiating a new project for your organization
including: developing new educational materials, teaching programs, or
serving as a mentor/supervisor to volunteers or students over the
summer months. The cost of sponsoring a member is a cash match of
$3,800 and an in-kind match of $3,250 for the three month term (June
2010- August 2010). During these three months, PCEI provides members
with a living allowance of approximately $900/month, health insurance,
worker’s compensation insurance, a child care allowance (if
applicable), and loan forbearance. Once each member has completed
his/her term of service in August, they will earn an education award of
$4,725 that can be used to pay back existing loans and/or used for
future tuition. The sponsor application deadline is December 18,
2009 for the 2010 summer.
What is a typical MEEC member like?
All MEEC members are college graduates in fields such as biology,
geology, natural resources, education, and outdoor leadership among
others. They have all undergone a national background check and have
no convictions that would prohibit them for working with vulnerable
populations.
