Moscow’s first annual Bike Swap was held in East City Park on September
15th, 2007. The event was organized as part of PCEI Nursery Technician
and AmeriCorps member, Isaak Julye's Community Action Project.
The Bike Swap, which took place on a sunny late summer Saturday, was
envisioned as a commuinty celebration of cycling and provided an
opportunity for people of all ages to buy, sell and trade bicycles and
cycling equipment. A group of knowledgeable volunteers were on hand to
answer participants’ questions about cycling safety, bicycle fit,
maintenance and other two-wheel specific questions.
The event was well-attended by over 70 people ranging from hard-core
cycling enthusiasts to first-time bike buyers to college students
looking for a beat-up Friday night cruiser. Twelve sellers came with
bikes and boxes full of parts and filled all the available table space.
Dave Peckham from the Village Bicycle Project and Moscow’s Bicycle
Brothers provided technical support—free bike repair and advice. The
buyers and sellers were busy all day.
All went well—only two inner tubes were exploded during the whole event
and there were no bike crashes despite some impromptu racing between the
three-wheeled bike car and a very small child’s bike.
