As part of my term of service, I am required to complete a Community
Action Project (CAP) that addresses a community need and increases
citizen involvement. I chose to focus my attention on volunteering in
the local community. Because of the commitment made by the new
presidential administration, signing the Serve America Act- which will
expand the AmeriCorps program to triple its’ current programs, I
volunteered my time, energy, and resources to inform others about the
multiple volunteer opportunities that are available locally. Based on
the recent shift in our economy, the issues I addressed were applicable
to each student, providing them ways to volunteer their way into a job
and possibly a career.
My goal was to speak to as many classes as possible in the Moscow
community, focusing on the history of service, the different methods of
volunteering, and why it is important and relevant to each student,
personally. I presented to three high school classrooms and two college
classrooms, speaking to a total of 150 students. I have received
positive feedback from all participants, including students,
volunteers, teachers, and professors. My volunteer presentation
generated discussion and interest in various ways of volunteering.
Because of these conversations, I recruited two volunteers who
participated in three hours of work at the PCEI Nature Center.
