Community Building Events
PCEI organizes two stream clean-up projects annually. One at the end of March or early April in Pullman, Washington as part of the Washington State University Cougar Pride Days and the other in celebration of Earth Day in late April in Moscow, Idaho. These events are designed to promote community involvement in stream health and restoration.

Paradise Creek has been the focal point of our stream clean up efforts since 1991. Paradise Creek flows through Moscow, Idaho and joins the South Fork Palouse River in Pullman Washington. Our clean up efforts in Pullman, focus on Missouri Flat Creek and the South Fork Palouse River. We have been engaging the community of Pullman in clean up activities since 2004. The annual event was started by Randy Stevens,a PCEI AmeriCorps member, as his Community Action Project.

We have won a number of awards for our work: Mayor's Award 2004, Mayor's Award 2006, and Down and Dirty Award 2007. To date many tons of garbage has been removed from our local waterways with the help and dedication of hundreds of volunteers. The entire community benefits from the effort by improved water quality, better habitat for wildlife, improved public safety and a more beautiful waterway. PCEI plans to continue to organize annual stream clean-ups as long as necessary.

Adopt-A-Stream
The Adopt-A-Stream project in Moscow was started in 1991 with initial grant funds from Idaho Department of Environmental Quality. The goal of the project is to inspire people to become stewards of their watershed. The general idea is that stream segments are delineated and adopted by local community and student groups. The stream stewards are then responsible for cleaning and caring for their adopted segment. This commitment at minimum requires a yearly clean-up effort that can be coordinated with the community event. Some stream stewards will take their responsibility one step further and monitor water quality, wildlife, etc. The name of the steward is displayed on the sign similar to the Adopt-A-Street program. PCEI is in the process of expanding this project to include the Pullman, Washington community. If you are interested in becoming a stream steward please contact us!
