Starting in 2005, PCEI staff, AmeriCorps Members and volunteers have
been monitoring several wetland areas along Paradise Creek and the
South Fork of the Palouse River. All surveyed wetlands were enhanced
and/or created through PCEI’s watershed restoration efforts! Due to
their permeable skin and aquatic life style amphibians are highly
susceptible to environmental hazards, such as pollution. Amphibians
are often compared to “canaries in a coal mine” since they are
typically one of the first animals noticeably effected by environmental
degradation. Therefore, the amphibian monitoring data, particularly the
species diversity and number of amphibians present, can be used as an
indicator of the wetland’s health. To learn more about the methods used
to collect amphibian data please visit the Monitoring Amphibians on
the Palouse webpage.
