Before fence installation, summer 2009.

The issue addressed for my Community Action Project was access to information on how to locate the giant cedar grove on Moscow Mountain. I approached Mark Solomon who first told me about the cedars and Mike Bieser to see if there was something that I could do. Mark suggested the idea of a fence to keep off-road vehicles out of the stand. After seeing the impact that they had first hand, I thought this would be an appropriate addition to my project.

I had talked with Mike about putting up his winter trail signs, but in the end felt that it was not my place to put up the signs and lop off all the branches that may cross the trail when users were on top of the midwinter snowpack. I felt that it would make it look like a giant hallway in the summer time and that future managers would be better fit to make the decision. As far as the fence goes I did not see a problem with keeping the impact on the understory out and did not feel that future managers would see this as controversial. At the end of July about 60 feet of fence was constructed.

As far as finding information on how to locate the Cedar grove I approached this by creating a map on how to get to the trail head in the winter and summer from town. It also included a map of the trail to the cedars and the approach in winter.
