 The team at home. |
AmeriCorps arrives! For the third summer PCEI has had the opportunity to work with the
AmeriCorps program. This year the team arrived May 23rd and worked with
PCEI until July 10th. A number of great projects were scheduled to be
accomplished while the team was in town. Without their assistance these
projects could not have been finished as quickly as they were.
When the team first arrived they were busy planting native vegetation
along the creek at the Renaissance Charter School, Berman Creekside
Park, and in the rural lands. Near the Idaho border, just downstream of
the Moscow Waste Water Treatment Plant, the team, in conjunction with
the University of Idaho Farm Operations, has stabilized a highly
erodable reach of the creek. The streambank was resloping and an
erosion control blanket, which has native riparian seed underneath, was
laid out. Other stabilization techniques were used in areas where
excavation was not possible. These techniques included live willow and
red osier dogwood poles/stakes and coir logs that were secured into the
streambank.
At Berman Creekside Park, one of the outside banks of the stream was
severely eroding. The AmeriCorps team secured this area using a
technique called a tree revetment. The next project the team tackled
entailed creating a properly functioning low flow channel and
reconnecting the creek to the floodplain. This project, at the Bridge
Street Park, involved the use of soil wraps to achieve these goals. The
last project had them controlling the noxious weeds found at Carol Ryrie
Brink Nature Park.
In addition, the team was also busy working at the Community Garden.
They helped maintain the site, improve the pathway system and build a
shade structure. |

AmeriCorps, Chad, and Dave 06/01 Through the supervision and guidance by the PCEI staff (David Urban and
Chad Lammers), the AmeriCorps team members are able to assess a problem
and develop a strong action plan. |

AmeriCorps Group 05/25/01 For seven weeks, both the PCEI watershed staff and the AmeriCorps team
worked diligently outdoors in all types of weather to improve the water
quality along Paradise Creek. |

AmeriCorps Stinger 06/05/01 Chad and Michelle use a devise similar to a high power water sprayer to
bore a hole into the streambank. Once the hole is created a willow or
red osier branch is placed inside. The new "pole cutting" will take
root and form a new tree or shrub. |
