Paradise
Creek is located within the Columbia Basin in north central Idaho on
the western border with Washington. Part of the Palouse River hydrologic
basin, Paradise Creek drains approximately 88 square kilometers at
elevations that range from 2,520 to 4,356 feet. Paradise Creek is a 2nd
to 4th order stream with 55 small branches and tributaries. The
headwaters are located on the western slope of Moscow Mountain within
the Palouse Mountain Range. Paradise Creek flows through forested
headwaters and agriculture lands, then through the town of Moscow,
Idaho where it joins the South Fork of the Palouse River just over the
border in Pullman, Washington.
Since 1996, PCEI has been working with private landowners, local
agencies, community groups and the City of Moscow to restore Paradise
Creek. In 2004 the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality in
cooperation with local stakeholders developed the
Paradise Creek Total Maximum Daily Load in order to assess the water
quality in the watershed. PCEI restoration projects are part of the
Paradise Creek Implementation Plan that was designed as a result of the
TMDL assessment to help reduce pollutants loads in the watershed. PCEI's
projects include rural and urban restoration projects, stream bank
re-sloping and stabilization, channel re-meandering, backyard riparian
planting, wetland enhancement and roadside projects.
