Stream Clean Up on the Palouse
Paradise Creek has been the focal point of stream clean up in both Mowcow and Pullman. For the last 17 years Moscow has participated in a Paradise Stream Clean Up. Meanwhile, Pullman has joined the efforts and celebrated their third stream clean up in 2007.

The Stream Clean-up project is an annual event and is part of the Adopt-A-Stream Program. This event is designed to promote community involvement in stream health and restoration. It is a community-building event that has generated thousands of participants in Moscow over the years and has now become a feature community event for Pullman as well!

Adopt-A-Stream Program
The Adopt-A-Stream program in Moscow was started in 1991 with initial grant
funds from Idaho Department of Environmental Quality. The goal of the
project is to inspire people to become stewards of their watersheds. The
general idea is that stream segments are delineated according to ease of
access and visibility of signs. The stream stewards are then responsible for
cleaning and caring for their adopted segment. This commitment at minimum
requires a yearly clean-up effort that can be coordinated with the community
event. Some stream stewards will take their responsibility one step further
and monitor water quality, wildlife, etc. The name of the steward is
displayed on the sign similar to the Adopt-A-Street program.

The main component of the project is the adoption and stewardship of
designated stream segments by student groups, community organizations and
businesses. Other components of the project include restoration, monitoring,
and tree planting. Tasks involved in the initial phase of the project will
include: stream survey and segment delineations, sign design and
construction, sign installation, advertising to promote program and to
locate stewards. Ongoing efforts will include: sign maintenance and steward
updates.
